Tenreyro, who holds citizenship in Argentina, Italy, and Britain, brings a track record of high-level policy experience to the Washington-based lender. From 2017 to 2023, she served as an external member of the Bank of England’s Monetary Policy Committee, and she previously held roles at the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston and the Bank of Mauritius. Her transition into the position of economic counselor begins on August 10.
Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva emphasized that Tenreyro’s background in both intellectual research and practical policy will be vital for the Fund’s surveillance efforts. The role involves managing the IMF’s economic updates and acting as a primary voice on global outlooks, a task currently strained by the lingering effects of the pandemic and persistent geopolitical instability in the Middle East. Moritz Schularick, president of the Kiel Institute, highlighted her academic contributions to understanding economic shocks and currency unions as a significant asset for the institution's future trajectory.
