Corporate Hiring Shifts to AI-Led Interviews

When Bijo Thomas logged on for his job interview this spring, he wasn't met by a hiring manager, but by a digital avatar named Sophie. As companies struggle to process a surge of applications, AI chatbots are increasingly acting as the initial gatekeepers for white-collar roles across the United States.

The transition from human-led screening to automated interviews is moving beyond entry-level retail work into professional sectors. Companies like Coinbase, Zapier, and ManpowerGroup’s Experis have quietly integrated these systems to manage high application volumes. For candidates, this means the first impression is now often made before a human recruiter ever sees a resume. Proponents argue that these tools allow for a larger, more efficient candidate pool, with Zapier reporting it now screens five times as many applicants as it previously could.

However, the shift remains controversial. Critics express concern that algorithms may inadvertently rely on biased metrics, such as speech patterns or facial expressions, while job seekers have reported frustration with the impersonal nature of the process. A Greenhouse survey found that 38% of applicants have abandoned a hiring process specifically because it required an AI-led interview. Despite these hurdles, experts suggest that candidates who refuse to engage with the technology risk being sidelined. As the industry scales, career advisors are now urging professionals to treat these automated conversations as essential tests of their ability to navigate a digital-first workplace.
