OpenAI executive Fidji Simo steps down to manage chronic illness

Fidji Simo, the chief executive of applications at OpenAI, is transitioning to a part-time advisory role following a severe flare-up of postural tachycardia syndrome (POTS). Her departure, announced Thursday on social media, marks a pivot from full-time corporate leadership to a focus on managing the complex, often debilitating neurological condition.

Simo, who cofounded the Metrodara Foundation and the Complex Disorders Alliance, first received her diagnosis in 2019 after years of misidentification by medical professionals. She initially stepped away for a temporary medical leave this past April, but she ultimately concluded that the path to stabilization required a permanent reduction in her professional obligations. "The truth is that I am only making this decision now because I failed to make it many times before," Simo wrote, acknowledging the difficulty of balancing high-stakes executive duties with the demands of her health.

POTS impacts the autonomic nervous system, specifically disrupting the body’s ability to regulate heart rate and blood pressure when shifting to an upright position. According to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, patients frequently experience orthostatic intolerance, resulting in dizziness, fainting, and heart palpitations. While the condition predominantly affects women between 15 and 50, its triggers remain varied, ranging from viral illnesses and major surgeries to pregnancy and trauma. Researchers are currently investigating links between the disorder and long-term COVID-19, as many patients report similar cognitive challenges, including brain fog and persistent fatigue. While there is no known cure, management strategies currently rely on hydration, increased salt intake, and specific medication to stabilize blood volume.
