Walmart defies AI displacement trend with 10 high-growth career tracks

As artificial intelligence reshapes the corporate landscape, the world's largest private employer is doubling down on human capital. Walmart’s chief people officer, Donna Morris, argues that technology should serve to elevate roles rather than replace them, identifying ten specific career pathways that remain critical to the retail giant's future.

With a workforce exceeding 2.1 million, Walmart is positioning itself against the industry trend of using automation primarily for staff reduction. The company currently lists nearly 41,000 active job openings, signaling a sustained demand for both corporate and front-line talent. Morris emphasizes that the retailer’s service-driven model necessitates a human-centric approach, where internal mobility is a core pillar of employee retention.

To bridge the gap between entry-level positions and high-skill roles, Walmart has ramped up its internal training efforts. More than 126,000 employees have utilized the company's education portal to earn certifications in fields ranging from AI to traditional trades. This pipeline is already yielding results; the retailer recently celebrated its 1,000th graduate from its truck-driving program and has successfully transitioned over 600 associates into specialized roles like HVAC technicians and electricians.

The featured career tracks include high-earning positions such as Supply Chain General Managers, with pay reaching up to $351,000, and Data Engineers, where salaries climb to $234,000. While the company did trim about 1,000 tech positions earlier this year to streamline operations, the overall strategy remains focused on long-term development. By providing clear trajectories—such as moving from a store associate to a store manager earning up to $170,000—Walmart aims to demonstrate that a frontline start can reliably lead to a lucrative, stable career.
