Mary Steenburgen Finds Peace in Career Misses

“I’m free of that,” Mary Steenburgen says of the professional jealousy that plagues many of her peers. Speaking on The Daily Beast’s Obsessed podcast, the 71-year-old actor revealed that while she once passed on a role she probably should have taken, she harbors no regrets about the life that choice created.

Steenburgen remains tight-lipped about the specific project she declined, noting it would be disrespectful to the actor who eventually landed the part. Instead, she credits a personal philosophy for her lack of professional envy. Her perspective rests on the idea that her path was inextricably linked to meeting her husband, Ted Danson, in 1995. Had she accepted that mystery role, she argues, she might never have become a stepmother to Kate and Alexis.

This outlook extends to the projects she did complete, including the occasional cinematic “turkey.” She views these experiences not as failures, but as opportunities for growth, lifelong friendships, and shared memories with her children. Her stance mirrors that of other industry veterans who have publicly reconciled with the roles that got away. Anne Hathaway, for instance, once described missing out on the lead in Barbie as a stroke of luck, suggesting the film’s massive cultural impact required the specific version that eventually reached audiences. Similarly, Cillian Murphy has expressed relief that he did not land the role of Batman, deferring to Christian Bale as the physically superior choice for the character.
