Beyond Medicine: The Top-Paying Jobs in Every State

Medical professionals dominate national salary rankings, but removing them from the equation reveals a different landscape. A new analysis based on Bureau of Labor Statistics data from May 2025 highlights the most lucrative roles across the country for those who haven't spent a decade in medical school.

When doctors and nurse anesthetists are stripped from the data, the map undergoes a significant shift. Chief executives emerge as the primary earners in half of all states, including economic hubs like Texas and Pennsylvania. The remaining states are largely divided between various management roles and the aviation sector, with pilots and flight engineers claiming the top spot in eight states.

Securing these high-level positions requires more than just technical qualifications. Matthew Siegel, a principal at Korn Ferry, notes that candidates often fail by providing dry recitations of their résumés. Instead, successful applicants frame their career trajectory through personal narratives that emphasize specific motivations, such as industry shifts or skill acquisition. Siegel advises that candidates should address any gaps between their current experience and job requirements directly, viewing transparency as a sign of professional maturity rather than a liability.
