Northern Trust Profit Surges 88% on Visa Windfall and Fee Growth

A one-time gain from a Visa share exchange offer paired with a surge in asset management fees propelled Northern Trust’s second-quarter profit to $792.2 million. The Chicago-based firm saw its net income nearly double from the $421.3 million reported during the same period last year, marking a period of significant expansion.

The company’s performance highlights a broader trend among major custody banks, echoing the recent quarterly gains reported by peers BNY and State Street. Northern Trust’s primary revenue driver—trust, investment, and servicing fees—climbed 10% to reach $1.35 billion. This growth coincided with a robust quarter for U.S. stock markets, where investor optimism surrounding AI-linked equities helped offset geopolitical volatility.

Assets under custody and administration rose 11% to $20 trillion by June 30, while assets under management grew 16% to $1.97 trillion. While the headline profit figure was heavily bolstered by a $525.4 million pre-tax gain from the Visa exchange, the bank’s underlying health remained strong. Excluding these notable items, earnings per share still posted a 40% increase, driven by sustained capital markets activity and client asset management services.
