Oprah Winfrey on the turning point of adulthood

“I think life starts at 44, because you come into yourself in a way that you're no longer trying to please everybody else,” Oprah Winfrey told Keke Palmer on her podcast. For the 72-year-old media mogul, reaching her mid-forties marked the transition from external expectations to genuine personal freedom.

Winfrey recalled that at 44, she finally shifted away from professional obligations to purposeful living. She argues that the early years of a career are not meant for the work-life balance often sought by recent graduates. Instead, she maintains that such equilibrium is earned through years of doing what one must, eventually granting the autonomy to choose only what one wants.

Her path to independence relied heavily on betting on herself, a philosophy cemented when she negotiated 50% of the revenue from her talk show rather than accepting a traditional salary. This move, inspired by Mary Tyler Moore’s career trajectory, allowed Winfrey to transition from an employee to a producer. She noted that despite being labeled arrogant by executives for her ambitions, owning her show became the catalyst for owning her life, ultimately enabling her to make decisions based on the purest parts of herself.
