Shemara Wikramanayake to step down as Macquarie Group CEO

After nearly four decades at the firm, Shemara Wikramanayake will retire as managing director and chief executive of Australia’s top investment bank on November 6. The transition marks the end of an eight-year leadership tenure that saw the institution navigate the global pandemic and aggressive international expansion.

Chair Glenn Stevens credited Wikramanayake with elevating the firm’s global brand and steering its operations through significant market shifts. Her successor, Greg Ward, currently serves as the head of the company's Banking and Financial Services division.

The leadership change coincides with a mixed financial performance report. While the firm noted increased net profits from its commodities and global markets segment, the contribution from Macquarie Asset Management declined. This dip follows the strategic divestment of the company’s public investments business across North America and Europe. Macquarie continues to maintain its policy of withholding quarterly profit figures.
