UniCredit Scraps Buyback as Commerzbank Stake Promises Higher Returns

With net profits hitting €2.9 billion for the second quarter, Italy’s UniCredit has abandoned its planned €4.75 billion share buyback. The bank is pivoting its capital strategy toward its aggressive expansion into Germany, betting that its 48% stake in Commerzbank will yield significantly higher returns than repurchasing its own stock.

The Milan-based lender reported quarterly earnings that comfortably surpassed analyst estimates of €2.8 billion. Buoyed by these results, the bank raised its 2026 income guidance, now projecting figures well above €11 billion. Management explicitly linked the cancellation of the buyback to the strategic shift, noting that the investment in Commerzbank is projected to deliver a 15% return.

UniCredit first moved into the German market in 2024, a decision that triggered immediate political friction in Berlin. Despite the resistance, the bank successfully maneuvered through a low-ball offer launched in May, ultimately securing control of nearly half of the German rival’s share capital by July. The integration of this stake now sits at the heart of the bank's long-term financial outlook, replacing the previous commitment to shareholder buybacks as the primary vehicle for capital deployment.
