From aerospace dreams to AI caregiving: How Lily Vittayarukskul pivoted

Lily Vittayarukskul spent her youth building water rockets and dreaming of NASA, but a family health crisis redirected her engineering ambitions. After watching her immigrant parents struggle to navigate the logistical and financial void surrounding her aunt’s terminal illness, she pivoted to build Waterlily, an AI-driven platform for long-term care planning.

The startup, which has raised $9.2 million, addresses the fragmentation between healthcare, insurance, and personal finance that leaves families vulnerable during medical crises. Vittayarukskul, who spent a decade in product engineering before launching the company, aims to provide families with personalized projections for care costs and funding strategies. She notes that while the technical challenge of integrating these disparate industries is immense, the motivation remains grounded in her own family’s experience of exhaustion and financial strain.

Her transition from aerospace to health-tech reflects a shift in her definition of impact. While she once equated success with solving complex technical puzzles, she now views it as providing stability for families facing the uncertainty of aging. Waterlily currently utilizes a database of over half a billion points to help users model their financial futures, attempting to prevent the cycle of isolation and resource depletion she witnessed as a teenager.
