Marquez, a native of Spain with a PhD in French linguistics, spent over a decade in the United States but found his salary consistently depleted by high costs of living and the necessity of expensive travel to visit family. The shift began in 2016 when he accepted a university position in Campina Grande, Brazil. Despite earning a similar base salary to his American wages, his lifestyle costs plummeted. Housing expenses were halved, and daily meals cost a fraction of what they did in Bloomington. This pattern continued when he moved to Shenzhen, China, in 2022, where he pays roughly $200 a month for university-subsidized housing and relies on affordable public transit.
Currently, Marquez earns approximately $75,000 annually after taxes, maintaining a savings rate of nearly 70%. By limiting his spending to roughly $22,000, he has successfully hit his Lean FI milestone. He invests his surplus using a 'permanent portfolio' strategy, which balances stocks, bonds, gold, and cash to mitigate volatility. While he has no immediate intention to quit his teaching career, he notes that his current investments are sufficient to cover his core living expenses. For Marquez, this achievement is not about early retirement, but about the freedom to prioritize travel, language learning, and time with family while continuing to work in an environment he enjoys.
