UEFA Leads Global Soccer Revolt Against FIFA Privatization Plan

UEFA and its 55 member nations have unanimously voted to boycott the World Cup and all FIFA-sanctioned tournaments. This unprecedented move serves as a direct challenge to FIFA’s controversial proposal to sell ownership stakes in its premier competitions to private investors, threatening the sport’s traditional governance model.

The decision follows a scathing rebuke from the Asian Football Confederation (AFC), which accused FIFA of bypassing necessary consultation. AFC President Sheikh Salman bin Ebrahim Al-Khalifa labeled the lack of financial and legal analysis as unacceptable, warning that any plan to monetize football’s foundations requires the unified support of all regional governing bodies. Currently, the proposal faces mounting resistance from CONCACAF and global player unions, including FIFPRO, who argue that commercial pressures will irrevocably alter the integrity of the game.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino has aggressively pushed the plan, which involves creating a $20 billion subsidiary to manage global events. To secure support, FIFA has dangled a $10 billion incentive package, promising $40 million to each member association that approves the deal by September 19. If rejected, that payment drops to $10 million. Despite this, critics maintain that the World Cup is not an investment product. Greg Maffei, a commercial adviser to FIFA, defended the project by citing broader trends in sports ownership, yet his assurances have failed to stem the tide of opposition from the sport's primary stakeholders.
