Coinbase stumbles as crypto winter stretches into third losing quarter

A prolonged slump in digital-asset trading has pushed Coinbase Global to its third consecutive quarterly loss, with transaction revenue sliding 21% to $599 million. The exchange’s shares fell 5.3% in after-hours trading as investors continue to shy away from volatile crypto markets amid persistent regulatory and macroeconomic uncertainty.

The company reported a net loss of $359.5 million, or $1.36 per share, for the quarter ending June 30. This marks a sharp reversal from the $1.43 billion profit recorded during the same period last year. Revenue from subscription and services, an area Coinbase has prioritized to diversify away from pure trading, also retreated by 12.2% to $555.1 million.

Third Bridge analyst Jacob Zuller noted that the firm faces a double-edged challenge: a sluggish market environment and a competitive lag in areas like tokenized equities and perpetual futures. While Coinbase looks to the Senate’s Clarity Act for a regulatory lifeline, CEO Brian Armstrong remains publicly optimistic about the legislation reaching a floor vote before the August recess. Meanwhile, the broader market contraction remains evident; competitor Robinhood Markets similarly reported a 38% drop in crypto transaction revenue, underscoring the industry-wide cooling in retail and institutional activity.
