Reformation Debuts on NYSE at $886 Million Valuation

Shares of the Vernon-based retailer Reformation opened flat at $15 on Thursday, cementing an $886.1 million valuation for the Permira-backed apparel brand. The company and its existing shareholders successfully raised $211 million through the IPO, arriving at a time when retail listings remain near decade-long lows despite a broader market recovery.

Founded in 2009 as a vintage boutique, the company has pivoted to a sustainability-focused model that relies on rapid design iteration. By launching new styles twice weekly online and once in stores, the firm aims to minimize waste while maintaining a direct-to-consumer base of over one million active customers. CEO Hali Borenstein claims the brand has barely scratched its potential, noting it currently holds less than 1% penetration in its total addressable market.

While the company touts 20 consecutive quarters of double-digit net revenue growth, market analysts suggest the sustainability narrative alone is no longer enough to win over institutional capital. Kat Liu, vice president at IPOX, noted that investors have shifted their focus toward core financial performance. According to Liu, Reformation’s high percentage of returning customers provides a critical buffer, offering the predictable revenue streams necessary to justify a premium in a skeptical retail environment. Looking ahead, the company plans to more than double its store count over the next five years, with a specific emphasis on international expansion.
