The risks of oversharing when you quit your job

Lilian Weng’s rapid transition from a stress-induced resignation at her startup, Thinking Machines Lab, to a new role at OpenAI has sparked a debate on professional transparency. While industry leaders can navigate such abrupt pivots, experts warn that public explanations for departures often carry long-term risks for the average worker.

When a public departure narrative clashes with a swift career pivot, it invites scrutiny that can undermine professional credibility. Aaron Perlut, cofounder of the consultancy Elasticity, suggests that employees are generally better off saying less, as inconsistent explanations can lead future colleagues to question an individual's reliability. Beyond personal reputation, citing specific personal grievances or health struggles can unfairly color perceptions of a former employer, potentially prompting unnecessary questions from investors or board members about the company's culture.

Communicators emphasize that the safest exit strategy is one of professional brevity. Employees are under no obligation to disclose their reasons for leaving to anyone beyond HR or a direct manager. If a social media announcement is desired, experts recommend waiting several days to allow emotions to settle and ensuring the content is something a future hiring manager could read without concern. As Bradley Akubuiro of Bully Pulpit International notes, protecting one's future flexibility is essential; providing too much detail often serves only to box a candidate in, limiting options rather than opening them.
