Leaving the US for Canada: How One Couple Found Stability

Shrutinder Kaur married her husband after a chance Facebook message, but their move to the United States soon turned into a professional and emotional stalemate. Facing restrictive visa policies that stifled her identity, she and her husband eventually gambled on a move to Canada to secure their future.

When Kaur moved to Arizona in 2015, the reality of her H-4 dependent visa quickly eclipsed the honeymoon phase of her marriage. Despite holding a law degree, she found herself unable to work, a common hurdle for many spouses of H-1B holders. The realization that she had sacrificed her professional identity for her husband's career prompted a desperate pivot. She eventually enrolled in an MBA program at Hofstra University, taking on a $100,000 loan to regain a foothold in the workforce, even as the couple endured long-distance separation and ongoing immigration uncertainty.

By 2018, the couple reached a breaking point. Observing peers stuck in multi-decade queues for US green cards, they concluded that the American dream lacked the stability they craved for their future family. They opted to trade the prestige of New York for the permanent residency prospects of Ontario. The transition provided an immediate release from the restrictive visa cycle. Within months of arriving in Canada in 2019, Kaur secured a position at the Bank of Montreal, later moving to a major insurance firm. For Kaur, the move proved that professional ambition and marriage could coexist, provided they were willing to risk the security of the familiar for a chance at true independence.
