The High Price of Ambition: One Woman’s Five-Job Path to Medical School

Eeman Farooqui wakes up at 5 a.m. to juggle a full-time clinical coordinator role alongside four side hustles, ranging from tutoring to DoorDash deliveries. The 24-year-old Buffalo resident maintains this grueling schedule on five hours of sleep, driven by a singular goal: funding her future in medical school.

Farooqui’s career trajectory shifted following the death of her grandmother, an event that moved her from a focus on neuroscience research toward the hands-on world of patient care. To cover the anticipated costs of tuition and relocation, she supplements her $4,500 to $5,000 monthly clinical salary with a dense web of additional work. Her week includes tutoring University of Buffalo students in biochemistry, per diem medical assisting, and babysitting three children. On weekends, she delivers food via DoorDash, a task she shares with her husband as a rare opportunity for connection.

Maintaining this pace has come at a significant personal cost. Farooqui reports constant fatigue, minimal time with family, and a social life that has effectively stalled. While she views her current discipline as a necessary sacrifice, she acknowledges that the cycle of exhaustion is not a long-term solution. As she completes her prerequisite courses, her focus remains fixed on her eventual specialization in women's health, treating her current state of burnout as a temporary, if punishing, bridge to her career as a physician.
