After a Netflix layoff, Edgar Tang chooses vulnerability over a new job

When Edgar Tang was laid off from his position as a video editor at Netflix in March, he did not immediately circulate his resume. Instead, the 50-year-old Singaporean turned toward the uncertainty that had terrified him for years, pivoting from corporate storytelling to sharing his own life experience online.

The transition followed a pattern Tang developed decades ago after surviving stage three Hodgkin's lymphoma at age 32. That brush with mortality taught him to confront his fears through incremental steps, a philosophy he later applied to moving between cities like New York and Los Angeles. When the restructuring at Netflix arrived, he viewed it not just as a professional setback, but as a signal to stop overstaying in a corporate environment where his role was ultimately dictated by external business shifts.

By enrolling in a content-creator course, Tang is now building a platform centered on his own history rather than a company's product. He argues that in an era of industry-wide disruption, professional identity is volatile, but personal experience remains an asset that no algorithm can replicate. While he admits that putting himself in the public eye carries the risk of criticism, he views this vulnerability as the only authentic way to navigate the uncertainty of mid-life career change.
