From DJ to Meta Tech Lead: A Career Built on Solving Problems

Henry Chen spent 13 years at Meta, evolving from a conference room technician into a tech lead before his position was eliminated this past May. His journey from spinning records to navigating the complex landscape of Big Tech serves as a window into the shifting priorities of a company in transition.

Chen joined Facebook in 2012 as a contractor, initially tasked with inspecting conference rooms. Leveraging his background in audio-visual equipment, he quickly found his footing. The trajectory of his career shifted in 2017 when he began teaching himself Python to automate the scaling of meeting room technology. This pivot from operations to software engineering defined his tenure, but the atmosphere at the company became increasingly volatile following the widespread layoffs of late 2022 and 2023.

Returning from paternity leave in late 2025, Chen found a workplace fundamentally altered by AI integration and shifting leadership mandates. When his own layoff notice arrived on May 20, the news was not entirely unexpected, given the climate of uncertainty. He spent the subsequent weeks focusing on family and professional reflection rather than rushing into a new role. Now, as he prepares to re-enter the job market, Chen is bridging the gap between his proprietary experience at Meta and industry-standard system design, working with a coach to sharpen his skills for the next chapter.
