Pierin Vincenz returns to court to contest fraud conviction

Pierin Vincenz, the former CEO of Raiffeisen Bank, returned to a Zurich courtroom on Monday to challenge his 2022 conviction for fraud. The high-profile appeal revisits allegations that Vincenz and his associate, Beat Stocker, orchestrated illicit gains by maneuvering company acquisitions to benefit their own private stakes.

The legal battle centers on claims that the pair enriched themselves by purchasing interests in firms shortly before Raiffeisen or the payments company Aduno acquired them. Beyond the corporate maneuvering, the court is revisiting the former executive’s controversial expense reports. Prosecutors maintain that Vincenz abused company credit cards for personal use, including trips to Dubai, visits to strip clubs, and a Tinder date, all billed to the bank. Vincenz has consistently dismissed these accusations, arguing the expenditures were necessary for cultivating business relationships.

In April 2022, a Zurich district court rejected that defense, handing Vincenz a sentence of three years and nine months for fraud, unfaithful business management, and passive bribery. Stocker received a four-year term. While the Zurich high court initially overturned the verdict on procedural grounds in 2024, the Federal Supreme Court intervened to reinstate the case. The current proceedings, scheduled to run through August 21 with potential extensions into September, see the 70-year-old Vincenz remaining at liberty as he fights to clear his name in one of the most sensational corporate scandals in Swiss history.
