Fei-Fei Li warns AI risks eroding student agency

The greatest threat AI poses to classrooms is not the temptation to cheat, but the potential loss of human drive. Fei-Fei Li, a Stanford professor and renowned AI researcher, argues that delegating critical thought to machines risks stunting the cognitive development and natural curiosity of the next generation.

Speaking on the Huberman Lab podcast, Li cautioned that schools must strike a delicate balance. A blanket ban on generative AI tools ignores their potential as learning companions, yet unrestricted access risks turning students into passive consumers of machine-generated answers. The goal, she suggests, is to preserve the student's internal motivation while leveraging technology to navigate complex subjects.

Evidence suggests this concern is well-founded. Research from Oxford University Press and MIT scientist Nataliya Kosmyna indicates that over-reliance on AI can sacrifice depth of thought for mere speed. Vivienne Ming of the Possibility Institute observed that many users treat these tools as a substitute for independent reasoning rather than a supplement to it. Li, who cofounded World Labs, proposes that AI should function as a bridge for students who are already engaged but need specific guidance to overcome academic hurdles, much like a tutor for a struggling premed student. If integrated with care, these tools could serve as a powerful catalyst for intellectual growth rather than a replacement for it.
