Jeff Dean’s Final Google Shift: From 1,500 Farewells to Startup Founder

At exactly 11:59:59 p.m. last Thursday, Jeff Dean officially shed his title as Google’s chief scientist. The departure of the company’s 30th employee concluded with a high-speed exit: after responding to hundreds of internal messages, he transitioned from a corporate veteran into a cofounder of his own AI venture, Discovery Loop.

The transition was marked by a grueling schedule that Dean shared during the KDD Conference in Jeju, South Korea. His final days included a video call with 139 close colleagues, followed by a farewell gathering that drew 1,500 attendees into a café space designed for a fraction of that crowd. Dean, who previously oversaw a division of roughly 4,400 staff, spent his final hours navigating a deluge of digital goodbyes.

By the time he closed his laptop on Thursday afternoon, he had waded through hundreds of messages on Google's internal chat, some of which were set to vanish the moment his access was revoked. Maintaining his long-standing reputation for intensity, he balanced these administrative tasks with a 7 p.m. yoga session and an 8:30 p.m. soccer match. The moment his tenure ended, he immediately began his new chapter at Discovery Loop, a startup he launched alongside former colleagues to pursue independent AI development.
