This clash over the so-called 'big light' is moving from viral TikTok discourse into the physical workplace. For many, harsh, cool-toned lighting is a source of eye strain, headaches, and general distraction. Conversely, others argue that dim environments make it difficult to read screens and stay alert. Much like long-standing disputes over office thermostats, the issue pits individual comfort against the constraints of a shared workspace.
At Atlas, the solution has been a localized compromise: keeping the overhead lights on over some desks while disabling them above others. Other employees have opted for personal lamps or screen-tinting software to soften the glare. However, experts warn against amateur fixes like covering light fixtures, which can pose fire hazards. Interior designer Lucia Fuentes suggests that businesses instead pivot toward a layered lighting strategy—incorporating warm-white LED bulbs and task lamps to provide employees with the flexibility to control their own environment, rather than relying on a single, uniform overhead source.
