Boston Leads Indeed’s New Ranking of Top US Cities for Employment

Boston claims the top spot on Indeed’s latest list of best cities for work, outperforming over 200 other metropolitan areas. The ranking, which evaluates factors ranging from career mobility to economic opportunity, highlights the city's balance between elite industry access and a growing culture of hybrid workplace flexibility.

Indeed’s assessment analyzed metros with populations exceeding 200,000, measuring success across six core dimensions including job security, compensation, and work-life balance. Sneha Puri, an economist at the Indeed Hiring Lab, noted that Boston’s first-place finish stems from its consistent performance across these categories. While the city excels in career mobility—ranking second nationally—it faces challenges regarding the high cost of housing and childcare. The region’s diverse economy, anchored by major institutions like Harvard University, continues to attract talent by blending professional opportunities with a dense social landscape, including a top-ten ranking for restaurant availability.

The Washington, DC, metro area secured a strong position by offering high career mobility, though it struggles with longer average commute times. Despite the high concentration of specialized roles in policy and research, job postings in the capital remain below pre-pandemic levels. Meanwhile, Burlington, Vermont, emerged as the third-ranked city, distinguishing itself through a stable, locally rooted job market. Unlike larger hubs, Burlington offers deeply embedded careers rather than transient roles, appealing to those prioritizing long-term stability over remote-first flexibility. Puri emphasizes that these rankings serve as a starting point, as individual priorities regarding life stage and professional goals often dictate which city ultimately provides the best fit for a job seeker.
