Swiss Bankers Forecast Stagnant Rates Through 2027

With the Swiss National Bank poised to maintain its key interest rate at 0% for the remainder of the year, industry leaders see little appetite for change on the immediate horizon. A survey from the Swiss Bankers Association suggests this zero-rate environment may persist well into 2027, defying some market expectations.

While the entire cohort of surveyed bankers anticipates the current 0% policy will hold through the end of 2026, views diverge regarding the subsequent year. Approximately 60% of respondents project the status quo will endure through 2027, signaling a cautious outlook on monetary easing or tightening cycles. The remaining 40% anticipate a shift, though predictions for a hike remain modest; most in this group foresee a move to 0.25%, with one outlier forecasting a rise to 0.5%.

These projections contrast slightly with broader market sentiment ahead of the SNB’s September 24 policy meeting. Financial markets currently price in a 97% probability of no change this month, yet they remain more aggressive regarding future shifts, largely banking on a 25 basis point increase by June. As the central bank prepares its next update, the divide between institutional consensus and market-driven speculation highlights the ongoing uncertainty surrounding Swiss monetary policy.
