Global Markets Find Steady Ground as Labor Data Looms

A sense of calm returned to global markets over the last 24 hours as oil prices leveled off and the volatile bond market retreated from recent peaks. Investors are now shifting their focus toward upcoming U.S. labor reports, weighing cooling yields against lingering concerns over energy costs and corporate earnings.

U.S. Treasury yields eased from multi-year highs overnight, offering a reprieve to investors. In Europe, however, natural gas prices surged to three-year highs, keeping regional markets on edge ahead of the winter season. Asian shares displayed choppy movement on Thursday, while Wall Street futures pointed to a positive open following Wednesday’s gains.

The Japanese yen saw a notable 1% pop on Wednesday, driven by speculation that the Bank of Japan may implement a rate hike of at least a quarter-point this month. Meanwhile, Broadcom shares slipped more than 1% in extended trading. Although the chipmaker beat expectations and projected strong AI-related sales over the next two years, its quarterly outlook failed to satisfy market participants. The company continues to face stiff competition from rivals like Marvell Technology.

Attention now turns to the U.S. labor sector following August ADP private payroll data that arrived slightly below forecasts. Market participants are bracing for the nationwide jobs report scheduled for Friday, alongside a series of economic indicators including weekly jobless claims and ISM non-manufacturing data. Fed officials, including Christopher Waller, Beth Hammack, and Austan Goolsbee, are also slated to speak, providing further context on the current monetary policy landscape.
