From Corporate Burnout to Autonomy: A Career Pivot Story

After a layoff abruptly ended her tenure as a senior manager earning CA$155,000, 32-year-old Evelyn Irwanto abandoned the corporate ladder. Rather than chasing another six-figure salary, the Toronto-based professional pivoted to a portfolio career of freelancing and content creation, seeking autonomy over prestige.

Irwanto’s journey began far from the boardroom. After graduating with a degree in nutrition, she spent months working for CA$14 an hour before realizing the field was not her calling. A four-month backpacking trip through South America provided the perspective she needed to pursue a total career overhaul. Upon returning to Canada, she took a series of roles that eventually led her into the tech sector. She climbed from a customer service coordinator to a revenue operations manager, eventually securing a senior manager position at a marketing consultancy.

Despite the financial rewards, the grind of corporate life took a toll. Burnout and a mandatory leave of absence culminated in a September 2025 layoff, which she describes as a heartbreaking but pivotal moment. Faced with new job offers in the mid-six-figure range, she chose to decline them. Instead, she leveraged her severance to build a revenue operations consultancy and a content creation business. By June, she had successfully matched her previous corporate income. For Irwanto, the shift represents more than just a change in employment; it is a move away from a scarcity mindset and a rejection of the traditional corporate ceiling that often demands personal sacrifice in exchange for a title.
