Wyoming Ousts Florida as Top Retirement Destination

Conventional wisdom points retirees toward the sun-drenched coasts of Florida or Arizona, but a new WalletHub analysis suggests the path to a comfortable retirement leads instead to the rugged mountains of Wyoming. The state captured the top national ranking by prioritizing affordability over year-round tropical warmth.

While Florida remains a popular choice for its lifestyle amenities, WalletHub analyst Chip Lupo notes that the post-pandemic financial climate has shifted priorities. Retirees are increasingly focused on making fixed incomes stretch, and Wyoming offers a distinct fiscal advantage. The state boasts no inheritance, estate, or state income taxes, pairing these benefits with a cost of living that remains lower than its southern counterparts when adjusted for retiree needs.

Beyond the balance sheet, the state excels in safety and social cohesion, reporting the seventh-lowest poverty rate for residents over 65. Casper, Wyoming, even secured a spot as the fifth-best U.S. city for retirees. However, the trade-off is significant. Wyoming ranks 33rd in healthcare, largely due to geographic remoteness that complicates access to specialized medical services. For those willing to trade consistent warmth for a quieter, tax-efficient pace of life, the state provides an alternative to the crowded, tourist-heavy hubs typically favored by retirees.
