The Iced Coffee Interview Debate

A plastic cup of iced coffee has ignited a workplace firestorm, with recruiters clashing over whether a morning caffeine fix signals professional incompetence or merely a generational shift in office norms. The debate highlights the widening gap between traditional hiring expectations and the evolving boundaries of younger job seekers.

For Dr. Colleen Batchelder, founder of the consulting firm Indiviti, the tension stems from a fundamental disconnect. She argues that Gen Z views the beverage as a simple necessity, while older hiring managers may perceive it as a breach of decorum. For candidates, the risk often lies in the mechanics: wet hands, potential spills, or the distraction of a cup during a formal handshake. Amanda Augustine of Careerminds suggests that if a candidate is uncertain, they should finish the drink beforehand or accept an office beverage instead. This strategy offers a tactical advantage, allowing the applicant to tour the breakroom and gauge the company culture.

Others view the scrutiny as an obsolete distraction. Steve Levy, a talent sourcing partner at Form Energy, dismisses the controversy as a trivial bias that prevents companies from hiring top performers. He warns that fixating on such superficial criteria risks creating a stagnant, homogenous workforce. To Levy, the evolution of workplace standards—much like the decline of the three-piece suit—is inevitable. If a company prefers to police beverage choices rather than fill roles, he argues, they have lost sight of the primary goal: talent acquisition.
