When the hustle ends: Rethinking success as a freelancer

Hannah Howard launched her freelance journey in 2014 after a layoff at 27. The early years were defined by a desperate, scrappy hustle, from consulting on cheese to writing digital shelf copy for major retailers. By 39, with a mortgage and two children, she had secured what many in the gig economy covet: a substantial monthly retainer. When that contract abruptly ended this past summer, the familiar panic set in, accompanied by the urge to immediately fill the void with new, equally demanding work.

Yet, the expected devastation never materialized. Instead, the gap in her schedule revealed that her most meaningful pursuits—journalism, teaching, and editing—had been relegated to the margins of her professional life. Rather than aggressively hunting for a replacement, she is now intentionally leaving that space open. This transition marks a departure from the survivalist mindset of her twenties. She is no longer just proving she can make a living; she is deciding what kind of career is worth sustaining for the next decade.
