Why a Software Engineer Chose Munich Over the American Dream

Ishansh Gupta once viewed the United States as the ultimate destination for his tech career, fueled by the polished promises of Bollywood cinema. However, a series of internships in Poland and a serendipitous encounter in Berlin shifted his trajectory toward Germany, where he ultimately built his life at BMW.

Gupta’s pivot began when he realized that international students could access tuition-free public education in Germany, a stark contrast to the estimated $100,000 cost of a master’s degree in the US. In 2019, he enrolled in a private German institution for a data engineering degree, paying 8,000 euros after securing a partial scholarship. This path led him to an internship at BMW, followed by a PhD program and a full-time role as a digitalization specialist. By 2026, he had transitioned into an HR position focused on AI initiatives for senior executives.

A brief professional stint in South Carolina in 2022 provided Gupta with a direct comparison of the two work cultures. He observed that the American corporate environment heavily prioritizes personal branding, visibility, and frequent job hopping. In contrast, the German workplace emphasizes long-term stability, supported by robust labor protections and indefinite contracts. While he acknowledges that American culture drives faster career bets, he finds the German approach to work-life balance better suited to his lifestyle. Having avoided the financial burden of high-interest student loans, Gupta now views his career progression—anchored in Munich—as a success that offers both stability and global mobility.
