Life at the Edge of the World: A 60-Year-Old’s Antarctic Routine

After a career in Silicon Valley marketing, May Lee traded corporate boardrooms for a warehouse in Antarctica. At 60, she navigates a rigid schedule of cargo logistics at McMurdo Station, where the workday is governed by the arrival of C-17 supply planes and the perpetual daylight of the southern summer.

The transition from HP’s free-flowing corporate environment to the strict "town hours" of McMurdo Station was stark. Lee starts her day at 6:30 a.m., clocking in by 7:30 a.m. to manage inventory and forklift cargo. Her responsibilities include tracking supplies arriving via aircraft, a rhythm that shifts as the season progresses; while heavy C-17 transport jets dominate the early months, warming temperatures eventually force the station to rely on smaller planes.

Beyond the warehouse, the station functions like a self-contained campus. Life revolves around the cafeteria, where workers trade stories and hoard "freshies"—scarce produce like bananas that arrive on supply flights. Despite the professional rigor, the social scene is surprisingly dense. With limited internet access, residents turn to community-driven pastimes, from volunteering at the library and attending science lectures to hosting radio shows. On Saturdays, the nightlife persists until the early hours, facilitated by the disorienting reality of 24-hour daylight. Lee, who plans to return this year as a broadcast engineer, finds the community’s camaraderie a compelling reason to leave the comforts of home behind.
