The shift away from manual syntax is already reshaping industry standards. Schmidt suggests that while young people should still learn to code, the goal is no longer to construct the house brick-by-brick. Instead, mastery now requires the ability to command AI models like OpenAI’s Codex or Google’s emerging products to execute complex designs.
This transition is moving from theory to operational reality. At the startup Daytona, CEO Ivan Burazin reports that his 16 engineers have abandoned manual coding entirely, choosing instead to manage fleets of AI agents. Similarly, Anthropic CFO Krishna Rao recently noted that over 90 percent of the company’s codebase is generated by Claude Code. In this new landscape, the human role is increasingly defined by oversight, strategic direction, and the precision of the instructions provided to the machine.
