Why the best way to land a job is to avoid applying

The modern job hunt has turned into a digital "cattle call," with the average posting attracting 244 applications in 2025—more than double the volume seen in 2022. To bypass this crowded bottleneck, career experts argue that the most effective strategy is to secure a connection before a position is even listed.

Waiting for a company to post a vacancy often places a candidate at a permanent disadvantage. Once a role goes live, HR departments are typically bound by internal policies to process every applicant through the standard, often impersonal, digital queue. By then, the opportunity for a personal advocate to influence the hiring process has largely evaporated. Laura Labovich, a veteran career coach at the Washington, D.C.-based Career Strategy Group, describes the shift as moving from a passive applicant to an insider.

Building those relationships requires foresight. Rick Wargo, a managing partner at the recruitment firm Boyden, equates the process to home maintenance: you do not wait for a storm to fix the roof. By reaching out to peers or potential managers to discuss their experiences at the company—rather than asking for a job directly—seekers create a network that can eventually lead to a referral. Data supports this approach, as LinkedIn reports that direct outreach to a hiring manager nearly triples an applicant's chances of success. In an era where AI tools allow candidates to blast thousands of resumes into a void, a warm introduction remains the only reliable way to stand out.
