The Invisible Trap: How I Nearly Fell for a Sophisticated Job Scam

After six years of covering the workplace, I thought I knew how to navigate a hiring process. Yet, when a polished recruiter reached out with a high-paying offer from a major company, I found myself ignoring the mounting red flags until a demand for payment exposed the deception.

The outreach began with a flattering email, referencing my portfolio and a specific role at Indeed. The sender provided a professional LinkedIn profile, a photo, and a salary range of $125,000 to $165,000. It felt legitimate, matching the professional tone of a high-stakes recruitment process. The trap only snapped shut when the recruiter insisted I pay for a third-party resume service to move forward. A quick inquiry to the company confirmed my suspicions: they were not hiring for the role, and the recruiter was an impostor.

This is a growing trend. According to LinkedIn’s 2026 Job Search Safety Pulse, 36% of recruiters report being impersonated, a reality that makes building trust increasingly difficult for legitimate hiring managers. Career coach Erica Rivera suggests that while some scams are blatant, others rely on high-quality mimicry. Legitimate recruiters will never require payment for resume services, equipment, or application fees. If an interaction shifts toward financial demands or requests for sensitive personal data like social security numbers, immediate cessation of contact is the only safe path. Verification remains the best defense; always cross-reference any job opportunity against the company’s official career page or reputable platforms before engaging further.
