S&P 500 faces a high-stakes test as earnings growth slows

The S&P 500 remains within striking distance of the 8,000-point milestone, yet a growing chorus of analysts warns that the index is running on fumes. With oil prices surging and Treasury yields at multi-decade highs, investors are questioning whether even strong third-quarter earnings can sustain the current market momentum.

Julien Lafargue, chief market strategist at Barclays Private Bank, suggests that market participants have moved past the point where merely good results will suffice. Investors now demand exceptional performance to justify current valuations. This skepticism is compounded by the upcoming U.S. midterm elections and a cooling outlook for the broader market. When excluding the technology and energy sectors, earnings growth for the remainder of the S&P 500 is projected to fall to 5%, a sharp decline from the 14% growth seen in the previous quarter.

Market breadth remains a primary concern for institutional observers. Despite the index hovering near record levels, 62% of its components are currently trading below their 50-day moving averages. This disconnect suggests that a handful of mega-cap stocks are masking underlying weakness. Kevin Gordon of the Schwab Center for Financial Research notes that these giants have created an illusion of calm, leaving the benchmark vulnerable to any single leadership stumble. Consequently, firms like Citigroup and RBC Capital Markets have begun shifting their stance, rotating capital out of U.S. equities and technology toward more defensive sectors like healthcare.

Signs of investor fatigue are already visible globally. Samsung Electronics recently reported a record-breaking $80 billion in quarterly profit, yet the market response was muted, leaving shares significantly below their June peak. Similarly, TSMC reported record profits driven by AI demand but tempered its outlook for 2027 due to macroeconomic uncertainty. For the S&P 500, the path forward appears increasingly narrow, as the reliance on a small cluster of AI winners leaves the index fragile against shifting credit quality and rising interest rates.
