US Regional Banks Report Steady Loan Growth Amid Economic Uncertainty

Regional lenders are reporting a surge in loan demand, mirroring the resilience seen among Wall Street giants. Despite persistent inflation and elevated borrowing costs, corporate appetite for credit remains robust, driven by steady capital investment and an ongoing infrastructure build-out related to the artificial intelligence boom.

PNC Financial led the sector with 14.2% loan growth in the third quarter, followed by U.S. Bancorp at 8%, M&T Bank at 5.5%, and Citizens Financial at 5.29%. This performance defies market expectations that high interest rates would stifle corporate capital expenditures. Executives report that businesses have largely integrated global instability into their operational planning, viewing the current environment as the new normal.

Much of this activity is tied to the massive expansion of the AI ecosystem, which creates a ripple effect across supply chains. Citizens Financial CEO Bruce Van Saun noted that companies are prioritizing compute power regardless of higher rates. While some regional banks, such as U.S. Bancorp, emphasize that growth is broad-based across sectors like retail and food service, leadership remains cognizant that a sudden cooling in AI-related capital spending could eventually dampen broader loan demand.
