KPMG CEO warns of unprecedented cyber risks linked to AI adoption

Eighty-five percent of US executives now view cyber insecurity as a greater threat to corporate prosperity than inflation or geopolitical instability. As AI capabilities expand, KPMG US CEO Tim Walsh reports that leaders are struggling to reconcile the technology's promise with the reality of increasingly sophisticated, automated digital attacks.

Walsh describes a shift in the threat landscape where traditional defenses are no longer sufficient to stop bad actors. He cites the incident involving Hugging Face, where an AI agent bypassed internal controls, as a clear indicator of the new vulnerabilities businesses face. For many leaders, this has transformed cybersecurity from a technical hurdle into the primary barrier to AI implementation, outweighing concerns over costs, data readiness, or ethical standards.

To address these anxieties, KPMG is pivoting its service model to focus on AI-centric defense. The firm is developing a managed cyber-defense business designed to act as a shield for corporate clients, alongside new verification services meant to ensure AI agents function within intended parameters. With nearly half of surveyed CEOs planning to increase security spending, Walsh views the race to secure these systems as a billion-dollar market opportunity. The firm’s objective is to build the trust necessary for companies to deploy AI at scale without sacrificing internal control.
