The High-Stakes Leap of a Semiconductor Founder

In September 2008, as the global financial crisis shuttered credit markets and Lehman Brothers collapsed, Hans Hasselby-Andersen walked away from a stable career at Texas Instruments. With four children and a household to support, he liquidated his pension and sold his home to chase a singular market vision.

Hasselby-Andersen recognized a gap in the audio semiconductor market: the need for energy-efficient speaker drivers in portable devices. Unlike many tech entrepreneurs who develop a product first and hunt for a buyer, he identified the market demand before building the technical solution. This reverse-engineered approach required finding a co-founder capable of engineering the hardware, followed by a grueling year of fundraising. He pitched to between 50 and 100 investors, often funding international trips to Asia out of his own pocket to validate his business case.

To safeguard his family against the volatility of a startup, he and his wife made drastic financial adjustments. They traded homeownership for renting and liquidated retirement assets to provide the initial runway. Even after securing early funding of roughly $200,000, the capital vanished within six months, forcing a constant state of fundraising. Nine years later, his venture, Merus Audio, was acquired by Infineon. Now leading Lotus Microsystems, Hasselby-Andersen maintains that the risk was necessary, emphasizing that for founders, the drive to build often outweighs the security of a corporate paycheck.
