Starting Over at 60: Landing a Job in Antarctica

After three decades in the tech industry, May Lee pivoted to a career at the bottom of the world. Securing a position at McMurdo Station required navigating a competitive hiring landscape, a rigorous 17-page physical qualification process, and a deep-dive government background check before her final deployment.

The path to Antarctica began with a realization that standard corporate résumés often fail to clear automated screening filters. After applying for three distinct roles with various US Antarctic Program contractors and receiving an initial rejection, Lee adjusted her strategy by aligning her experience precisely with specific job descriptions. A recruiter from Amentum eventually reached out, leading to a series of interviews that covered behavioral and competency-based assessments.

Acceptance came with the caveat of an alternate status, which required Lee to fast-track her health and security clearances. The medical vetting was extensive, involving eight blood tests, vision and dental exams, and a comprehensive physical to ensure she could withstand the isolation of the continent. Once cleared, she transitioned from an alternate to a primary hire. After months of medical documentation, vaccine updates, and logistics training in Christchurch, New Zealand, Lee finally touched down at McMurdo Station aboard a Boeing C-17 Globemaster III.
