The Art of the Résumé: Why Your Application Might Be Failing

Hiring managers spend mere seconds scanning an application before deciding its fate. In a stagnant labor market where the hiring rate hovers around 3.3%, job seekers struggle to distinguish themselves from a sea of standardized profiles, often inadvertently sabotaging their prospects with generic language or over-reliance on artificial intelligence.

The current landscape mirrors the post-Recession era of the early 2010s, leaving nearly 2 million people in long-term unemployment. Candidates increasingly turn to AI to bridge this gap, yet recruiters warn that automated drafting produces hollow results. Michelle Volberg, CEO of the recruiting firm Twill, likens AI-generated résumés to beautiful restaurant menus that lack an actual kitchen; the presentation is polished, but the substance remains absent.

While some firms, such as Expensify, have begun bypassing traditional résumés entirely in favor of direct candidate questioning, most employers still demand them. Priya Rathod, formerly of Indeed, suggests treating technology as a collaborator rather than a ghostwriter. By using AI to sharpen existing bullet points rather than generating them from scratch, applicants can maintain the personal touch necessary to survive the initial screening process.
