The Office Perk That Actually Matters

For some modern employees, the deciding factor in a job offer isn't the stock options or the catered lunches, but the bathroom facilities. As bidets transition from niche home fixtures to workplace essentials, they are becoming an unexpected benchmark for how companies value the daily comfort of their staff.

Seungmin Hong once weighed a job at Tesla against an offer from Simbe Robotics. During his final interview at the latter, he discovered a bidet in the office restroom and signed on. For Hong and a growing number of workers, the fixture represents a tangible commitment to employee well-being that ping-pong tables and nap pods fail to deliver. The trend is gaining momentum as manufacturers like Toto report surging global sales, bolstered by a rise in household adoption that makes the absence of a bidet in the office feel like a significant downgrade.

Employers are beginning to respond to this shift, sometimes through direct employee requests. Cynthia Howard, a specialist at the logistics firm Swifthouse, successfully lobbied her CEO for a $60 bidet attachment, arguing it would improve morale and efficiency. Others are taking a more systematic approach. Jonathan Brown, a data scientist, launched a platform called buttstuff.work to help employees anonymously signal interest in bidet installations to management. While plumbing modifications and electrical requirements can pose hurdles, recruiters like Robert Hatta suggest that such investments may soon be a competitive advantage for companies struggling to entice workers back into the office. In an era where office culture is under constant scrutiny, the bidet has emerged as a surprisingly potent symbol of workplace dignity.
