The Meta layoff that pushed me to reinvent my appearance

At 43, Jonathan Yang decided he was tired of feeling meek. After three years on the Meta office design team, a layoff served as the final catalyst for a total physical transformation, blending aesthetic procedures, weight loss, and a newfound sense of professional command that he says changed how he is perceived.

For years, Yang lived under the pressure of the so-called Facebook 15—the weight gain associated with the high-stress, food-rich environment of big tech. While his salary provided the means to invest in a $10,000 hair transplant and other cosmetic procedures, his confidence remained tethered to his professional status. He admits that he felt physically and emotionally depleted by the demands of his job, viewing aesthetic improvements as a way to dismantle the shame he felt as a man seeking personal transformation.

The shift accelerated when he began using GLP-1 medications, which helped him lose weight and, he claims, fundamentally altered his workplace presence. He describes a stark difference in his professional trajectory, noting that as he grew more comfortable in his skin, he began landing promotions and commanding rooms with an ease he previously lacked. When his layoff finally arrived, he pivoted his focus entirely to wellness to manage both his health, including chronic sciatica, and his self-image.

Yang now observes a transactional reality in how he is treated by others. While society often preaches that character outweighs aesthetics, his experience suggests otherwise. He notes that people now treat him with more respect and gravitate toward his physical improvements, confirming his suspicion that conventional attractiveness remains a powerful, if unspoken, currency in professional and social settings.
