Life as a Pilot Couple: Jet-Setting Through a Long-Distance Marriage

A coffee shop inside San Diego International Airport served as the setting for Tyler Bell and Jenn Hoare’s recent date night. As airline pilots for different carriers, the couple navigates a lifestyle that toggles between intense, weeks-long separation and the freedom to traverse the globe together on standby.

Tyler Bell, a first officer at JetBlue Airways, and his wife Jenn Hoare, a pilot at Breeze Airways, have built a relationship defined by aviation. Their connection began in a flight school in Massachusetts, where Bell worked as an instructor after Hoare transitioned from a career as a flight attendant. By 2025, they were married at the New England Air Museum, surrounded by historic aircraft and celebrating with cocktails served from airline galley carts.

Maintaining the marriage requires deliberate over-communication and rigorous coordination. Because their flight schedules are dictated by monthly bidding, the couple treats their life like a flight plan, prioritizing shared time for holidays and family events. Despite the challenges of weather disruptions and misaligned shifts, they utilize their standby travel benefits to sustain a whirlwind of international adventure. Recent trips have taken them from the Dolomites in Italy to a grueling seven-day trek up Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, which they summited on their first wedding anniversary. While they acknowledge that their current rhythm will eventually shift as they look toward starting a family, the pair remains focused on maximizing their physical peak to explore the world while the cockpit remains their shared professional home.
