Salesforce shifts hiring focus from engineers to sales staff

Marc Benioff is signaling a fundamental change in the Salesforce workforce strategy, revealing that the company’s engineering headcount has remained stagnant at 15,000 for two years. Instead of technical roles, the firm is aggressively expanding its sales division, banking on humans to handle tasks that AI agents currently cannot.

During Wednesday’s earnings call, Benioff pointed to the dramatic capabilities of new coding agents as the primary reason for the shift. While the company is integrating automation to handle tasks—evidenced by the 4,000 support roles cut in September—the CEO emphasized that sales and client communication remain distinctly human domains. Miguel Milano, the company’s president and chief revenue officer, is now leading the primary growth engine for the firm’s expansion.

This pivot occurs against a broader backdrop of Silicon Valley firms leveraging AI to streamline operations. From Cloudflare’s 20% staff reduction to Block’s significant workforce cuts, executives are increasingly citing AI-driven productivity as a justification for downsizing. Yet, the trend is not universal. Leaders like Duolingo’s Luis von Ahn argue that creative roles in design remain irreplaceable, while experts suggest that employees should prioritize specific, non-automatable skills over relying on the perceived safety of particular job titles. Salesforce itself continues to lean heavily into the technology, projecting a $300 million expenditure on Anthropic tokens this year to fuel its internal AI projects.
