Former Snowflake CRO Chris Degnan is challenging the industry’s obsession with forward-deployed engineers, arguing that the role—while surging in popularity during the AI gold rush—fails to attract top-tier talent who prefer building core products over performing what he characterizes as glorified professional services work.
The forward-deployed engineer (FDE) model, popularized by Palantir, embeds developers directly within client companies to build custom AI integrations. While demand for this role has skyrocketed—Indeed reports a 5,230% surge in job postings since January 2025—Degnan warns that the structure creates significant long-term liabilities. According to the former executive, these engineers often churn out bespoke solutions that leave customers struggling with technical debt once the contractor exits.Major players are doubling down on the strategy regardless of these critiques. OpenAI has committed over $4 billion to its Deployment Company, and Google has established dedicated internal organizations to facilitate similar AI integration. Companies like Stripe are also adopting the model, seeking specialists to accelerate AI adoption across non-technical departments. Despite these massive investments, Degnan insists the hierarchy remains clear: the most capable engineers will continue to gravitate toward core product development, leaving the FDE pipeline staffed by those prioritizing service over fundamental innovation.
