Why Your Résumé Is Losing the War for Attention

In a job market flooded with AI-optimized applications, the most effective tool for landing an interview isn't a polished CV, but a human connection. Career experts suggest that shifting your focus from online portals to professional networking is the only way to bypass the digital pile and get noticed.

In a job market flooded with AI-optimized applications, the most effective tool for landing an interview isn't a polished CV, but a human connection. Career experts suggest that shifting your focus from online portals to professional networking is the only way to bypass the digital pile and get noticed.

Andy Chan, who leads career development at Wake Forest University, argues that job seekers often treat the recruitment process as a cold, transactional exchange. This approach frequently fails, he says, because "people hire people, they don't hire paper." Instead of spending 100% of your energy hitting the 'apply' button, Chan recommends allocating 60% to 70% of your time to building relationships. A simple endorsement from someone inside an organization can be the difference between a rejection and an interview invitation.

Networking does not require aggressive sales tactics or excessive socializing. Career expert Catherine Fisher emphasizes that maintaining a professional network is a muscle that requires consistent, small movements, such as engaging with someone’s content or sending a brief message to keep a connection warm. When you do reach out for an informational interview, preparation is non-negotiable. As career coach Madeline Mann notes, if you are requesting 15 minutes of someone’s time, you must demonstrate that you have invested at least 15 minutes of your own researching their background and the company.

Jane Curran, global head of HR operations at JLL, suggests that while submitting an application is a necessary first step to get on an employer's radar, the real work begins immediately afterward. This 'hustle' involves leveraging platforms like LinkedIn to uncover mutual connections who can advocate for your candidacy. However, this human-centric strategy should not lead to neglecting your documentation. Kathleen Powell, chief career officer at William & Mary, warns that since many firms use automated tracking software to filter candidates, your résumé must remain well-organized and keyword-optimized to ensure that once a human finally reviews it, your qualifications are impossible to miss.
