With a salary package reaching $445,000, OpenAI is recruiting a safety researcher to navigate the risks of recursive self-improvement. As the company pushes toward automating its own research capabilities, the role demands a strategist capable of anticipating dangers that have yet to materialize in current AI systems.

The drive toward models capable of training their own successors has moved from theoretical discourse to active development. Recent improvements in coding tools from OpenAI and Anthropic have accelerated the timeline for autonomous systems, leading Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis to suggest humanity is nearing the threshold of a singularity where AI intelligence begins to outpace human input. OpenAI’s new hire within its Preparedness team will focus on these high-stakes transitions, specifically targeting defenses against data poisoning and developing methods to interpret the reasoning behind increasingly complex machine decisions.

CEO Sam Altman has publicly outlined ambitious goals for this trajectory, aiming for an automated AI research intern by September and a fully autonomous researcher by 2028. While these advancements promise significant efficiency, they also invite scrutiny from safety advocates. Researchers at METR have noted that the capabilities of frontier models are doubling every seven months, fueling concerns about the speed of deployment. By hiring for this specialized position, OpenAI intends to formalize its oversight of agentic AI threats, biological risks, and the internal automation of technical staff.
