The Daily Pay Gap: Retail CEOs Out-Earn Workers in Hours

At 24 of the largest retail and restaurant companies in the United States, top executives take home as much in a single day as their typical employee earns in an entire year. With annual compensation packages often exceeding eight figures, the disparity highlights a widening chasm in corporate pay structures.

At 24 of the largest retail and restaurant companies in the United States, top executives take home as much in a single day as their typical employee earns in an entire year. With annual compensation packages often exceeding eight figures, the disparity highlights a widening chasm in corporate pay structures.

According to Bureau of Labor Statistics data, the median annual pay for a retail salesperson in the U.S. sat at $34,750 in 2024. While CEOs manage complex logistics, thousands of staff, and corporate liabilities, their remuneration—often bolstered by stock awards, corporate jet access, and security perks—routinely outpaces this figure before the end of the first business day of the year.

At the extreme end of the spectrum, Laura Alber of Williams-Sonoma earned $91,226 per day in 2025, while Tractor Supply Co.’s Hal Lawton followed closely at $88,431 daily. Starbucks CEO Brian Niccol and Walmart’s Doug McMillon also commanded daily rates exceeding $80,000. These figures stand in sharp contrast to the median worker compensation at those same firms, which frequently falls below $25,000 annually. Costco remains a notable outlier in the analysis, as its higher median worker pay of $49,186 keeps the CEO’s daily earnings, $38,171, in a closer, though still significant, range relative to the staff.
